The RHS and The Association of Professional Landscapers (in conjunction with the Horticultural Trades Association) launched a competition in which APL members were invited to submit designs with set budgets of £7,000, £10,000and £13,000. The Low Cost High Impact gardens demonstrate that high quality design can be achieved with a fixed budget.
We decided this was something we could get our teeth stuck into, so we submitted several designs and ‘Our First Home, Our First Garden’ designed by Nilufer Danis was selected for the £7,000* category from among others.
This garden is designed for a young professional couple with little spare cash and knowledge of gardens or plants. A space to chill and entertain friends, their first garden is designed to inspire a love of being outdoors and gardening.
We decided to use sustainable reclaimed scaffold boards to create the walls, steps and decking. Not only does this keep the costs down, but it helps contribute to a low carbon footprint by reusing materials. For the gravel Ecomix was chosen, which is a recycled ceramic gravel, not only attractive but again reuses materials.
The planting was designed to be colourful and at it’s best during the summer and ‘BBQ’ season, so from June to September. There are three small ornamental trees within the scheme and evergreen shrubs to provide year round interest and structure. The sunken seating area features a Chiminea and log store.
