Build-up at RHS Chelsea Flower Show starts this week for both our teams. On 1st May, Mark Gregory and his Welcome to Yorkshire team will be the first to start on site.
Mark has been working for months in preparation for the show garden, which will put a slice of the Wensleydale countryside into the Royal Hospital show ground.
Mark, who is a Yorkshire man born and bred, made a few trips up to Yorkshire earlier this year to reclaim various different types of local stone for the garden.
Together with Richard Clegg and his crew, Mark hand picked the walling stone from a redundant stone wall within the Bolton Estate. The wall itself was in disrepair and the Estate were dismantling it to make a field more usable, so they were more than happy to loan the stone to be used in Mark’s garden. Exhilarated by the crisp snowy weather, Mark described the stone sourcing trip akin to finding ‘jewels’, and he found some great feature stone in the breathtaking Yorkshire Dales.
On Day Two of his sourcing trip Richard took Mark to collect another 18 tonnes of river gravels and rock which had been previously cleared from a storm and used to damn up the Gill on the Bolton Estate. They also sourced old yorkstone flags, bridge stone, stone roof tiles and ridges, from Abacus Stone, which will help to form the stone bothy and its setting in his design.
We can’t wait to see the stone being put into place as the build-up progresses in the next few weeks.
